And when you start rendering start with only flat masses at first. just -animal, -foreground, -bcgA, -bcgB, -bcgC. That is like 6-7 different layers and colours. Balance that until you like the feel of it, and then, only then start making gradients and adding details. Your first colour study is promising I find. And then you try to describe the interaction of the foreground light with the animal - with only on colour at first. one stroke on the animal until you find the right feel.
